What is Harm Reduction?

Harm reduction is a set of values and practical strategies that aim to meet people “where they are at”. To help them reduce harm that may result from risk taking behavior, such as drug use. Harm reduction accepts the reality that people can and will use drugs and engage in other activities that can cause them harm and works to minimize the harmful effects of these behaviors rather than ignore, condemn, or focus on ending the behavior. Harm reduction seeks to empower people by providing information and techniques to minimize potentially negative impacts of risk-taking behaviors.. Harm reduction-based programs have been critical to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention efforts since the 1980s and continue to play an important role in reducing new HIV infections and promoting the long-term health and well-being of people living with both Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Harm reduction is a core value of GREENBRIER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT (GCHD), along with each of the GCHD Programs.  Our health department programs, collectively, are dedicated to ensuring that harm reduction principles are integrated in all aspects of our programming.

Support

Our participants receive support in a number of ways. Our peer support specialists are people who are in recovery from substance or alcohol use disorder that have a deeper understanding of how our participants feel. Our nurses  and medical staff are compassionate and caring and offer only the best care for anyone who comes to the health department. Our volunteers are simply THE BEST and allow us to continue to offer these services to our community with empathy and understanding.
