Tattoo & Body Piercing

tattoo materials updated.jpgEnvironmental health is responsible for permitting and inspecting all tattoo and body piercing facilities in Greenbrier County. All new, remodeled, or facilities that have undergone a change of ownership must submit an application and possibly a plan review to the department. Facilities may not open to the public until an application has been approved and an opening inspection has been completed by the department. Tattoo and body piercing studios are governed under West Virginia Legislative Rule 64 CSR 80 and West Virginia Code Ch. 16 Article 38.

Please note all body piercing artists must be registered with the State of West Virginia and complete proper training. The following link contains information on acceptable training programs and information on registering.

The department frequently receives questions regarding the status of cosmetic microblading procedures. Please be aware the State of West Virginia has determined that microblading meets the definition of tattooing and therefore must be conducted in a permitted facility. Please review the documents above for information regarding requirements for obtaining a permit.
